Ah, sugar. Time and time again, it’s one of the most beloved, yet most harmful, ingredients in our cupboard.  

When you’re trying to eat healthier, no matter what eating or fitness plan you subscribe to, certain things remain the same. Lots of veggies and movement are paramount in any healthy lifestyle, and no matter what diet you are following, there is almost always an emphasis on reducing your sugar intake.  

To be frank, a diet high in sugar isn’t good for anyone. Let’s dive into why sugar is one of the main enemies of a healthy lifestyle and figure out ways to cut down the sugar so that it doesn’t ruin your healthy meal prep.    

Why is sugar so bad for you?  

Sugar is one of the reasons carbohydrates get such a bad name. Sugar comes in a couple of different forms including fructose (which is found in fruit) and lactose (found in dairy), but the most common form of sugar we refer to is sucrose, or the simple table sugar you might be picturing.  

Having too much sugar can cause hormonal imbalances that play a major role in your overall health. Your body produces insulin, a hormone that helps your body store sugar in your blood as fat. If you eat too much simple sugar, it is absorbed very quickly into the blood stream and causes quick blood sugar spikes. Over time, you may experience insulin resistance, which in turn can cause more insulin to be produced. If left unchecked, this can lead to adverse health effects including high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, and heart disease – just to name a few!   

So even if you are at a healthy weight, a diet high in sugar can wreak havoc on your health in the long run.  

How to cut out the excess sugar in your meal prep  

Sometimes, it feels like sugar is everywhere. Luckily, with many people making a swing towards living healthier lifestyles, there are definitely ways that we can reduce our sugar intake without sacrificing flavor and satisfaction in our meal prep plans.
